Deadpool 2’s red carpet (which you can experience from SYFY WIRE’s perspective here) brought out cast and crew to the merc with a mouth’s second showing — including prolific producer and screenwriter Simon Kinberg. This isn’t the X-Men mainstay’s first mutated rodeo, and it won’t be his last. Kinberg is producing Channing Tatum’s long-gestating Gambit film, and, talking with Variety, he had an update on when fans can expect the project.
After losing multiple directors (including Rupert Wyatt and Gore Verbinski), Gambit bounced from 2015 to 2016 to its currently scheduled June 2019 release date. The bad news is that they still don’t have a director. But Kinberg is optimistic, as you have to imagine him being. “We have a script that we love — that Channing loves,” Kinberg said. “We’ve met with a bunch of directors in the last couple of weeks, and we’re hoping to actually pick one in the next couple of weeks and shoot the movie maybe the end of this summer.”
Kinberg has compared Gambit to Deadpool’s troubled production cycle in the past, saying “I think the truth is when you have these movies that need a very special and unique tone, it takes a little while to find that tone. Deadpool feels like it exploded out of nowhere, but it was a 10-year development process on that movie. I think it was honed over those 10 years.”
It hasn’t quite been 10 years yet since Tatum signed onto the Gambit project and it began a realistic development process, but unless that director search bears fruit, it could see another year or two bump as the creative can is kicked in favor of X-Force and the Dark Phoenix saga.
