Production is well underway on the fifth season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., though a new report claims it almost didn't happen. But, when it comes to these decisions, Disney trumps ABC — and the Mouse House may have saved these Marvel heroes in the nick of time.

According to a report by Variety, it has been claimed that some execs at ABC felt they should have called time on the show after four seasons, but a “mandate came down from Disney” to renew it. Disney is said to have ordered the network to focus on S.H.I.E.L.D. over Inhumans, which has been hit with terrible reviews. (ABC has not commented on the report.)

For fans, this is obviously a happy outcome. S.H.I.E.L.D. has grown into a reliably entertaining show over its four seasons thus far, and creatively, deserves at least one more (despite not achieving the ratings ABC have been looking for). In fact, after a very slow first season, it’s fair to say that S.H.I.E.L.D. has gotten well into its groove as the years have passed, and it’s certainly gone down well with critics in more recent reviews.

Are you happy that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is returning for a fifth season? Or was four seasons enough? Let us know in the comments below.
