The first bit of casting news for Amazon's adaptation of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson's The Boys is here. Jessica Jones's Erin Moriarty will play the role of Annie January (also known as Starlight), reported Deadline today. She also had starring roles in the first season of True Detective and Matt Ross' Captain Fantastic.
Based on the comic book from 2006, The Boys takes place in a universe where superheroes get a little too big for their britches, their egos inflating out of control from their status of celebrity. As a result, they often put the world in danger with their carefree and wanton activities. To counteract the damage, the CIA sets up a team of its own heroes, "The Boys," that monitors their more foolhardly counterparts. January has the ability to shoot lightning from her eyes and looks up to an elite superhero team called "The Seven," which forces new members to perform sexual acts in order to join.
The series, which arrives sometimes in 2019, is a four-pronged production effort between Amazon, Sony Pictures TV Studios, Neal H. Moritz’s Original Films, and Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's Point Grey Pictures.
It was created by Supernatural and Timeless creator, Eric Kripke. This is the second television adaptation of Ennis' work that Rogen and Goldberg have put their names to, the first being AMC's Preacher. They will also direct some of the episodes. Filming is said to begin this coming spring.
