Alan Tudyk is following in some pretty big footsteps. The Rogue One: A Star Wars Story actor is reportedly making like Mark Hamill and voicing the role of the Joker in the upcoming Harley Quinn animated series on the DC Universe streaming service.
Word of the casting first surfaced after Diedrich Bader – best known as everybody's favorite nosy neighbor in Office Space – confirmed in an interview with Discussing Film that Tudyk was aboard to play the Clown Prince of Crime opposite Kaley Cuoco's Harley, Chris Meloni's Jim Gordon, and himself as Batman. Bader also voiced the Caped Crusader in the Cartoon Network's Batman: The Brave and the Bold.
"Alan Tudyk is Joker and is hilarious. I did a session awhile ago and he's very funny," Bader said.
While the storyline remains under wraps for the most part, the few details we do know have Harley splitting with Joker and setting out on a solo life of crime around Gotham. A slew of other familiar DC characters are expected to appear on the show, including baddies like Poison Ivy, and according to Bader Harley Quinn has an "Adult Swim-esque take" and is going be a lot of dark fun.
Lake Bell voices Dr. Pamela Isley, aka Poison Ivy, while Rahul Kohil is Dr. Jonathan Crane, better known as the Scarecrow. Other actors tapped for the all-star cast whose parts haven't been announced include JB Smoove, Natalie Morales, Jason Alexander, Wandy Sykes, and Giancarlo Esposito.
A rep for Tudyk could not be reached for comment.
The 47-year-old actor, of course, shot to fame playing Hoban "Wash" Washburne in Joss Whedon's cult space western TV series Firefly and its accompanying feature Serenity as well as earning praise for his sarcastic mo-cap turn as K-2SO in Rogue One. He also created the indie geek comedy Con Man.
But he's got a long track record in animation besides, having lent his voice to Disney's Frozen, Wreck-It Ralph and Big Hero 6, Batman: The Brave and the Bold as the Flash, American Dad, Family Guy, The Adventures of Puss in Boots, and The Tick, among many others.
In taking on the Joker, Tudyk is putting his stamp on the iconic role voiced for many years by Star Wars alum Mark Hamill in Batman: The Animated Series and many others, as well as played by Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, and Jared Leto on the big screen.
The actor is also slated to star in SYFY's pilot, Resident Alien, a darkly comic take on the Dark Horse Comic about an alien who crash-lands in Colorado and takes over the body of a small-town doctor.
