Along with the first clip from Marvel’s period-set Agent Carter series charting the genesis of S.H.I.E.L.D., it sounds like the ABC midseason project has now added a character with a major connection to Iron Man 2.

ComicBook.com is reporting actor Costa Ronin (The Americans) will play Anton Vanko in the upcoming ABC series Agent Carter. Anton Vanko is the father to Marvel supervillain Ivan Vanko, aka Whiplash, who was introduced in Iron Man 2 and played by Mickey Rourke. The elder Vanko is referenced in Iron Man 2, as Ivan is driven to kill Tony Stark because of the sour relationship between Howard Stark and Anton.

As you may remember, Anton claims he co-created Stark’s Arc Reactor technology with Howard, meaning that’s certainly a storyline that could be mined in the Agent Carter prequel series. Since Dominc Cooper is already on board as young Howard Stark, it seems he’ll apparently have some run-ins with this young version of Anton. Here’s hoping we’ll get a peek at the birth of Arc technology.

If you’re unfamiliar with Ronin, he’s likely best known for his role as Russian intelligence officer Oleg Burov in FX’s acclaimed spy drama The Americans. He’s great in the role, and we definitely think he has the chops to handle being a part of the Marvel Universe.

What do you think of the (apparent) addition of Anton Vanko to the prequel series? Is this a story you want to see told?
