We were extremely excited to hear former Firefly star Nathan Fillion would be popping up in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, and now we know who he is apparently playing — and it’s awesome.

Potential spoilers ahead for Guardians of the Galaxy!

It’s unconfirmed at this point, but Schmoes Know is reporting a “very reliable source with intimate knowledge” of the production confirmed Fillion will be lending his voice as Cosmo, the talking Russian cosmonaut dog who is chief security officer of the Guardians’ space base of operations, Knowhere.

First introduced in Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning’s epic 2008 Guardians run (on which the film is loosely based), Cosmo possesses psychic powers and pitches in from time to time to help out the Guardians. He also has a hilariously snarky love-hate relationship with Rocket Raccoon, which makes for some of the funnier lines in their 25-issue run. The character is great, and we’re glad to hear he’s (reportedly) getting a part in the film.

Considering the movie is taking a lot of cues from the 2008 version of the team, and they will be visiting Knowhere as we’ve glimpsed in the trailers, it makes sense Cosmo might pop up in some capacity. Heck, you have a talking raccoon, so why not a Russian dog? If you’re going all in, go all in.

Plus, c’mon — it’s Nathan Fillion. James Gunn has a wicked sense of humor, and this should cook up to be one really fun cameo.

What do you think? Are you pleased with Fillion’s apparent, super-secret role?
