The Dark Universe got off to a relatively slow start with Tom Cruise’s The Mummy, but Universal is still pushing ahead with a whole slate of monster movies — and Channing Tatum is on the short list to start hunting a few of them.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal is pursuing Tatum (21 Jump Street, Kingsman: The Golden Circle) to headline a potential Van Helsing film. Considering the way Universal is mixing things up by having some monsters be antiheroes, it’ll be interesting to see how they reimagine the idea of Van Helsing, who has typically been portrayed as a monster hunter.
There’s no word on what shape the project might take, but co-writer Eric Heisserer previously teased it would be a modern-day story with an “everyday hero” vibe, though all that could obviously change in development once a star is locked in. By targeting Tatum, it’s clear Universal is wanting to take a younger approach on this project (especially considering Van Helsing was, traditionally, an older gentleman). Whatever they do, there’s no way it can be worse than the 2004 film starring Hugh Jackman. Right?
What do you think? Is Tatum the monster-hunting hero you’ve been waiting for?
