Occasionally, the internet can be like a big game of Telephone. By the time a quote makes its way through the online news cycle, there's the off-chance it won't really resemble what was originally said. This time around, the unfortunate twisting of words happened to none other than Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson, who had to spend the last couple of days refuting news stories claiming he told fans to avoid the new trailer debuting Monday evening if they wanted to remain unspoiled.
On Sunday, Johnson responded directly to a fan who inquired about whether or not the new trailer for The Last Jedi would contain major spoilers:
By Monday, various news blogs had picked up on the quote, but Johnson's direct reply to a piece from Entertainment Weekly said he had been misquoted on the subject:
Later that same day, Johnson also quote-tweeted a UK news site called the Daily Express, which claimed he had told fans to "absolutely avoid" the trailer:
Johnson's original statement was aimed at fans who were attempting to go into The Last Jedi completely clean, i.e. without any real sense of the plot within the film. It's unlikely that the new trailer, which will debut tonight during Monday Night Football, will contain any major spoilers -- especially given how tight-lipped Lucasfilm and company were on any kind of story information leading up to the premiere of The Force Awakens. For what it's worth, Johnson totally understands there are fans who try to go into a movie clean, but admits he doesn't have the same will power: "I'm a weak man. I watch ALL THE TRAILERS".
Ahead of Monday night's new trailer and advance ticket sales, a new poster has also been released for The Last Jedi...
Will you be watching the new trailer? Or will you be attempting to go into the film clean?
