Rian Johnson doesn't really sound like he wants to direct Star Wars Episode IX

Anyone in Vegas who’s been betting on the next Star Wars director may have been better off playing the slots. Since the shocker about Colin Trevorrow no longer directing Star Wars: Episode IX  broke, the number-one replacement pick that people put galactic amounts of money on was Last Jedi director Rian Johnson—except chances of that are now apparently far, far away.

“It was never in the plan for me to direct Episode IX, so I don’t know what’s going to happen with it,” said Johnson, who remained somewhat cryptic about the subject at a press conference in Japan. “For me, I was entirely focused on Episode VIII and having this experience and now I’m just thinking of putting the movie out there and seeing how audiences respond to it.”

The name on the Episode IX version probably won't be Rian Johnson.

The implications are strong with this one, and became even stronger when he went on to all but explicitly admit he wont’ be directing the next movie.

“So no, I’m not really thinking about that now,” Johnson said. “Whoever does it, I’m going to be really excited to be an audience member again. And to sit down and see what the next filmmaker has to show us and where this story ends up going.”

It seems the latest Star Wars director has done everything but tell us he’s finished with Star Wars, but you have to wonder whether he said this because this wasn’t the place to make the official announcement or—for fans who still want a new hope—whether he still has a nebulous idea of his future schedule.

Try to decide for yourself:

Back to The Last Jedi. We just found out there will be a new alien who already was an alien in a past life: Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Johnson confirmed to Japanese media that the former Third Rock From the Sun star will be voicing a character in the movie, which definitely means a CGI alien. Maybe a better thing to bet on is whether that alien is humanoid like his Third Rock alter ego or something-else-oid.
