The folks at Lucasfilm are keeping pretty much everything about Star Wars: Episode VIII under wraps, but director Rian Johnson has opened up about how the long-lost Luke Skywalker will fit into the new cast.

In an interview with USA Today, Johnson said the core relationship of the film will be Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Luke (Mark Hamill), which makes sense, considering Rey made the trek to that mystery planet to let Luke know the galaxy needs him. It seems that where The Force Awakens largely focused on introducing a lot of the new players, they'll be tying together the new trilogy hero with the old trilogy hero as the crux of the narrative. Best guess is we'll have a mentor and mentee relationship, with Luke providing some guidance to these young heroes.

Here's an excerpt from his comments:

"I don't want to skip ahead two years. I want to see the very next moment of what happens. A large part of the movie [will focus on why Luke is there] … part of what’s she's (Rey) dealing with is the realization that she has this power and this gift. She's taking her first step to coming to terms with this thing inside her that she never knew was there and is just starting to reveal its potential."

Since Episode VII: The Force Awakens skipped ahead a good 30 or so years from the events of Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, it's encouraging to hear Johnson doesn’t want to miss any more time. Fans are clamoring to know what the heck happened when Rey arrived, and now we will. You know, in December.

Are you glad to hear Luke will be kicking it with Rey in Episode VIII?
