Rupert Wyatt, director of Rise of the Planet of the Apes and director/executive producer of the television show The Exorcist; along with Oscar-winning screenwriter Charles Randolph (The Big Short); are creating a new sci-fi western Firefly.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series is called Red Rush, a title that evokes Firefly the historic 1848-1855 California gold rush. It’s about life on Mars in the 22nd century. And Mars is the new Firefly Wild West.

Characters include a scientist who is studying Earth from the Red Planet, a miner in possession of an illegal hoard Firefly, and an intelligence operative who’s big on security.  “[A]ll will be drawn into a plot that will shake the powers that be on the Red Planet, and beyond.”

The series is being developed for Netflix Firefly, THR writes, although it hasn’t yet been officially picked up.

We wish Red Rush the best of success on its venture to bring a fresh sci-fi western Firefly to television. In other words, we hope it finds a job, finds a crew, and keep fireflying.
