Apparently, The New Mutants writer-director Josh Boone isn’t just an X-Men/New Mutants fan, he’s also a classic rocker. Or at least that’s what the Easter eggs in his latest Instagram shot of the new film would suggest.
First, let’s get to the obvious X-Men/New Mutants reference in the picture, featuring (from left to right) Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar/Mirage, Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie/Cannonball, Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin/Magik, and Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa/Sunspot.
Look a little closer, though, and you’ll see Taylor-Joy is holding a hand puppet of a purple dragon, which appears to be the same puppet a young Illyana is clinging to at the 1:40 mark of the first teaser trailer below, and shown in the image up top.
Of course, this little, loveable puppet also looks a whole lot like the X-Men’s space-traveling, fire-breathing, telepathically-resistant pet dragon, Lockheed. Though Lockheed took a particular liking to the X-Men’s Kitty Pryde, he also bonded with Taylor-Joy’s character, Illyana Rasputin, in The New Mutants comics, and has proven to be quite an ally to both.
Now, on to Easter egg No. 2, which proves beyond the first trailer's cryptic Pink Floyd cover that Boone is indeed a rocker. If you’re wondering why he hashtagged this recent photo as such, it’s because the pic is an obvious homage to the cover of Highway to Hell, AC/DC’s sixth studio album. Since Magik’s spirit is bound to Hell, it’s only appropriate that Taylor-Joy would be the one to emulate Angus Young’s famous, hell-raising sneer.
After the full-on fright fest presented thus far in the majority of the film’s marketing, it’s good to see Boone and his cast having a little fun. As to whether that lighter side, or Lockheed for that matter, will appear in the movie, we’ll have to wait till April 13, 2018, to see.
