When NBC's Revolution returns tonight with its midseason premiere, expect mythology, nanotech and Patriot invasion evilness, said executive producer Rockne S. O'Bannon in an exclusive interview with Blastr.

“The thing that we're really working toward in the second half of the season is to crank up all the show's mythology. That level of the show is going to take big quantum leaps in terms of the epic saga of it all. There will be very big plot moves involving, obviously, the nanotech, and Aaron, and that part of the story, but then also the Patriot invasion, which we've been purposely building a very strong foundation for. By letting it be slow, we really get to meet a lot of the players in the Patriot world,” said O'Bannon.

In the first half of Revolution's second season, we learned that the Patriots have nefarious plans and that Aaron has been controlling the nanotech without knowing about it, and at great personal cost. Monroe joined the rebels, and Neville worked to take down the Patriots from the inside and discovered that his wife was indeed alive.

The Patriots “disguise themselves really well behind some very, very good masks. As we get into the second half of the season, you're really going to see our heroes starting to shatter those masks. They're going to have great fun doing it and great satisfaction,” said O'Bannon.

“The other story that's particularly fascinating from a series mythology point of view is Aaron's story, because he's really been through the wringer so far this season. And that's only the beginning. … What's fun and unique about his story is, because the nanotech is running roughshod over his life at the moment, you never know quite what's going to happen. Aaron will find himself on this mind-boggling pilgrimage that really starts to dig into an awesome discovery. He starts to learn things. His journey is the deeper, bigger mythic aspect of the show,” he said.

As for the former Big Bad, we'll meet “a new player in Monroe's life that we're going to introduce in our first episodes right back from the break. This is someone who's going to really explode, if not all of our existing relationships, then many of them. Real excited about that. Just that it's someone who not only will enter our world through Monroe, but also will carry off all of our characters in all sorts of different ways, good and bad,” said O'Bannon. The hint for this one could well lie in the sneak peek below.

“Obviously, family is at the very core of the show. But trust is going to be an important theme this season. Certainly making impossible choices. That's going to be rampant throughout this. I've always looked at Revolution as this mythic saga, the story of humankind's future. We're watching the heroes of that future. We're watching in present time when a hundred years from now they'll be erecting statues to. We're watching them go through the maelstrom of helping humanity grow from this electrical power-dependent society into what will be the next step. It's also the theme of growth and discovery and making the right decisions  -- often the harder or hardest decisions  -- and still holding on to your sense of humanity,” he said.

Revolution airs on NBC on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET.
