Neal Stephenson’s Seveneves is heading to the big screen, and the project has signed one heck of a heavy hitter to make it happen.

Variety reports Ron Howard will reunite with Apollo 13 writer Bill Broyles to bring Seveneves to life. The story focuses on a catastrophic event that turns Earth into a time bomb, so nations team up to try and push humanity into the stars for survival. Fast-forward 5,000 years, and a new race of humans decide to come back and explore their mythical home world that has been transformed in the millennia since.

The project has the makings of a truly ambitious sci-fi event, and considering it’s based on Stephenson’s (Snow Crash) stellar novel, they’re working from an excellent jumping-off point as far as scripting is concerned. Here’s hoping with Howard attached (along with Broyles), the project might actually make it through development relatively quickly.

Are you looking forward to seeing this one on the big screen?
