While Season 3 of Outlander wrapped up two months ago on Starz, fans can help fight the #Droughtlander by looking ahead to the April release of the third season of Ronald D. Moore’s time-travel series on Blu-ray (and DVD), which will come with a few extra goodies. Found in the Collector’s Edition only is this never-before-seen screen test between leads Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe, which Sony has just released online.
Heughan had already been cast as Jamie Fraser months before they brought in Balfe for a final screen test with him, in order to see A) how much chemistry the two actors had between them, and B) if she was the right fit for the role of Claire Randall. As you can see below, their audition video not only turned out to be sizzling hot, it also got Balfe the highly-sought-after part.
“This was a very important step before we cast Caitriona, because we had obviously already cast Sam […] so we were looking for chemistry between the two characters,” says Moore while introducing the video below. “We really felt that Cait was probably going to be the one, but this was the final moment; this was when she literally sealed the deal and got the show. As you see, they sort of already got the shorthand of their characters, and there is definitely on-camera chemistry between the two.”
The scene acted out for the screen test is from Season 1's "The Reckoning" episode, which follows Jamie’s rescue of Claire from the evil clutches of Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies) in Fort William. Even before the cameras started rolling on the show, the duo proved they had a boatload of chemistry between them, which has been one of the many keys to the success of Outlander.
The cameras kept rolling a bit afterward to see Heughan and Balfe a little more relaxed after their intense screen test, and you can see that although they're a bit awkward with the cameras still rolling, they already seem to have a nice rapport.
Outlander Season 3 will be released on DVD, Blu-ray, and Blu-ray Collector’s Edition on April 10. Season 4 is expected to debut sometime this year.
