SYFY WIRE's 'Metal Crush Mondays' reveals that Ronnie James Dio's 'Holy Diver' is getting a comic adaptation

By Jacob Oller
Metal Crush Monday week four

From a song about DC Comics bad boy Lobo to an Anthrax/Battlestar Galactica reunion, SYFY WIRE's "Metal Crush Mondays" has given genre fans and metalheads a whole lot of badass news during the course of its August run. Now, with the last episode of the month, it's got one last surprise in store: an official comic for Ronnie James Dio’s Holy Diver.

During a conversation with SYFY WIRE's Whitney Moore (which also featured Slipknot's Corey Taylor, Korn's Jonathan Davis, and In This Moment's Maria Brink), manager/Ronnie James Dio associate Wendy Dio announced the Holy Diver comic — courtesy of Z2 Comics, with infamous horror comic scribe Steve Niles. Is there a more recognizable album cover in the metal canon? It could sustain a comic on imagery alone. Thankfully it won't have to, though — and SYFY WIRE has the details.

The interview below accompanies a screening of Rob Zombie's Halloween, which airs tonight on SYFY as part of this week's "Metal Crush Mondays."

Take a look:

"What I want to try to do is create the background story for [the album cover], so we get the whole story of how that image came to be," Niles said. "I'm just in the planning stages right now, but the cover is my main inspiration. The cover and the song." When pressed on the story, Niles was clear that even a hint would give it all away.

"Ronnie used to read a book a day," Dio said. "The obvious ones — Stephen King, H.G. Wells, Dennis Wheatley, Frank Herbert (he loved the Dune books), Edgar Allan Poe — and then into the fantasy with Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Harry Potter." While Niles is writing the book, it's also got plenty of visual bona fides: Artist Scott Hampton is illustrating, while the legendary Bill Sienkiewicz is handling covers.

Holy Diver looks to drop during the summer of 2021 and can be pre-ordered now at Z2 Comics here. Fans can find more interviews on SYFY WIRE's YouTube page and extended "Metal Crush Mondays" conversations on the Metal Crush podcast.
