Claire Temple is becoming the Agent Coulson of Marvel’s Defenders mini-universe. As with Phil Coulson, agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., she’s appeared in multiple properties. And as Phil Coulson expanded his screen time in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., so Rosario Dawson’s character will get a larger role in the upcoming Netflix series Luke Cage.
Mike Colter, who plays the hero for hire, told IGN, “She's going to serve a very significant part of the Luke Cage story. Not overwhelmingly so, but you will definitely be satisfied with the amount of screen time you see. ... She’s definitely going to be someone that's going to have a large storyline and help out a lot.”
Claire first appeared in Daredevil as a nurse who helps Matt Murdock and gets herself hurt in the process. They have a brief romantic relationship, but even after it ends, she continues to tend his wounds. In Jessica Jones, Claire continues her role as superheroic support staff when she cares for Luke at Jessica’s bedside.
In the Marvel comics, Claire becomes involved with Luke. But ultimately Luke marries Jessica. Will the TV series follow the comic books and hook Claire and Luke up? Or will Luke and Jessica remain a non-item? Colter said:
"I think with Jessica, there's so much chemistry there that we still need to find out are we compatible, and that's the part that's going to be interesting. As far as Claire is concerned, we have to wait and see how that relationship evolves.”
But it seems as long as she has her nursing skills, she’ll remain the Defenders’ most wanted and needed.
As Colter said, ”Because she plays a nurse that basically seems to be in the right place at the right time, and she's very good at helping out superheroes who are in need, and I think you will see some of that in Luke Cage. ... Ultimately I think she's going to be a very good companion for Luke. I think she's someone that Luke needs in his life at this time.”
