If Rosario Dawson really is done with the Marvel TV universe, at least she went out on top. The versatile actor, who’s appeared in all of Marvel’s Netflix shows except for The Punisher, recently revealed how she helped shape her powerful breakup scene in Season 2 of the streaming giant’s Luke Cage.
Speaking to fans at a 2018 Tribeca TV fest panel over the weekend, Dawson said that she persuaded Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker to make some changes in their breakup scene in order to swing the implicit power dynamic more toward the middle, instead of allowing her character, Claire Temple, to take a more passive back seat.
“When the scene was first written, to be honest, it was a little bit more written on his side and his storyline and that kind of stuff,” Dawson said, via Indiewire. “And I approached Cheo and had the audacity of adding some lines and rewriting some stuff and asked him if that could work.”
Dawson said Coker liked her take so much that he asked her to join the writing team to help shape the scene into what we see on screen. “[H]e gave me a really amazing compliment — he said, ‘You want to join the writers’ room? Because this is great,’” Dawson said.
Luke and Claire’s final moments together come after Luke’s wall-punching outburst, followed by Claire’s revelation that she comes from a family background of domestic abuse. Afterward, the two agree that maybe it’s time to take a break from their relationship — and it’s the last time Claire and Luke are on screen together.
Dawson hinted earlier this year that she’s uncertain about her future with Marvel, but admitted at Tribeca that appearing in The Punisher remains an unfulfilled wish. “The Punisher was always the one I really loved — I couldn’t believe I wasn’t on that one,” she said.
During a conversation with IndieWire, Dawson added:
"Who knows if I’ll come back again? [The breakup] was looking like it was going to be a big final scene for Claire, and it was really as a culmination of three years and being on five different shows.”
At least there’s no shortage of Claire Temple elsewhere. You can catch Dawson in all the rest of the Marvel shows — Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Daredevil, Iron Fist, and The Defenders — currently streaming on Netflix.
