Rumor of the day: Agent Carter renewed for Season 3, despite low ratings

The ratings have not been kind to Marvel’s cult hit Agent Carter, but a new report indicates the ABC series will be coming back for a third season, anyway.

Nerd Reactor claims to have a “source within the studio” that has apparently confirmed ABC will be bringing the show back next season. Take this with a grain of salt, of course, but it seems there could be some good news for the period-set adventure series coming. Agent Carter was born as a midseason project to help bridge the gap during Agent’s of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s offseason, and with S.H.I.E.L.D. officially back next year, it’d stand to reason they might keep Agent Carter around, too.

But, TV is a ratings game, and Agent Carter has not been doing well. Viewership is literally at one-third of the series premiere (6.9 million down to 2.3 million), and they slid steadily for most of Season 2. Oh, and the season finale marked a series low. Ouch. So, on the surface (despite this report), Carter still feels like a long shot.

On the creative side, Agent Carter is a unique series unlike just about anything else on television (not to mention Marvel’s catalog). There’s no denying it plays a part in the larger universe, and it’s essentially a matter of how important this show is to Marvel’s overall strategy — namely, is it important enough to keep around despite the sub-par ratings?

If this report is to be believed, the answer is yes. But, only time will tell.

What do you think? Would you like to see Agent Carter come back?
