If the post-credit scene in Captain America: Winter Soldier taught us anything, it’s that Marvel isn’t afraid to introduce major new characters in what is essentially an easter egg role. Are they doing it again?
With Benedict Cumberbatch’s long-rumored role as Doctor Strange finally official, rumors abound that ongoing reshoots and pickup shots for Joss Whedon’s Avengers: Age of Ultron will include a cameo for Cumberbatch’s version of Stephen Strange. If they could make it fit organically, it makes sense they might drop him in, and other rumors indicate he could also pop up in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War as well.
Of course, if Marvel does include a Cumber-cameo, that doesn’t mean he’ll be Sorcerer Supreme just yet — the role could have him just pop up as a surgeon at this point, if they go the origin story route in his planned 2016 standalone film — but it’s tantalizing to think we might get a look at Cumberbatch in his eagerly anticipated Marvel role a full year early.
As a report at Inquisitr notes, some scenes glimpsed in the initial Age of Ultron trailer shows a gurney/hospital scene, as well as a mansion atop a hill, which could all connect to the Doctor Strange legacy. A stretch at this point? Sure. But, it didn’t stop Marvel from giving us our first peek at Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver in a scene that was almost completely disconnected from what came before, and that move generated a boatload of buzz.
Do you think Marvel is savvy enough to sneak in a Doctor Strange cameo here, or will we have to wait for his full-fledged movie to see Cumberbatch in action?
