Not content to let Marvel Studios have all the fun, it sounds like Fox is getting ready to combine its two biggest comic licensees into one Avengers-style crossover. Yep, that’s right: Fantastic Four vs. X-Men could be a reality.
A new report has surfaced via investment news site The Motley Fool that Fox is in the early planning stages for a Fantastic Four vs. X-Men film, which will be loosely based on Chris Claremont’s 1987 limited comic series of the same name.
According to the report, the "Avengers-style" movie will set “the characters against each other because of secrets regarding the Fantastic Four's origin,” which (sorta) meshes with the storyline from the comic. But, though the title fits a crossover well enough, this seems like a strange pick to base a blockbuster movie on.
So, could this be true? Probably, at least the part about Fox eyeing an eventual crossover between the two properties. The studio is hoping Bryan Singer’s return for Days of Future Past and Apocalypse will have X-Men back at the top of the box office, while Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four reboot could finally bring some quality to the brand. So why wouldn’t they put the two together at some point?
But will it be based on this comic arc? That one seems like a stretch, because we can think of way cooler stories to use if you’re actually bringing these two universes together. Like, you know, teaming them both up to battle a mega-threat. If anything, we’d look for Apocalypse to potentially do a little world-building in 2016, following the release of Fantastic Four in 2015 to lead into a crossover.
What do you think? Do you want to see a team-up?
