Hardcore DC Comics fans should be on the lookout for a human easter egg when Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice rolls into theaters next year.
Heroic Hollywood reports that Callan Mulvey (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, 300: Rise of an Empire) is playing Anatoli Knyazev, better known to comics fans as KGBeast, in the film. An enhanced KGB agent, Knyazev first popped up in the 1988 Batman storyline "Ten Nights of the Beast," in which he was on a mission to kill 10 high-ranking U.S. officials until Batman got in his way. Later appearances included the "No Man's Land" and "Blackest Night" stories, with a reanimated Beast recruited in the latter to join the Black Lantern Corps.
The character, in different versions, has also turned up on Season 2 of Arrow, as well as the Justice League Unlimited cartoon series and the animated film Batman: Assault on Arkham.
In Batman v Superman, he'll be the right hand man of Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg), tasked with keeping tabs on the many metahumans sprouting up on Earth. He probably won't be known as KGBeast in the film, but it's still nice to know that DC -- like Marvel -- might be populating its supporting roles with names that will ring a bell with longtime readers and fans.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is out in theaters March 25, 2016.
