We’re really enjoying the debut season of Star Wars: Rebels, but it sounds like Disney is already prepping its next new animated series set in a galaxy far, far away.
The folks at /Film are reporting Disney has mapped out a total of 3-4 seasons for Rebels, which will then lead into another new animated series that will be set during the upcoming sequel timeline — meaning you could have crossovers, shared characters and connected storylines. Think how Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. crossed over with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, probably.
The followup series would include all-new characters and be set during the sequel trilogy. According to the report, Disney opted to launch things with Rebels to bridge the gap and generate some buzz before diving headfirst into the sequel timeline (which should be a familiar world for viewers by that point, thanks to The Force Awakens). The new show would apparently launch around 2017-2018, along with Star Wars: Episode VIII.
The report apparently comes from a good source with knowledge of Lucasfilm’s plans, and honestly, this would make a whole lot of sense. Disney has shown it knows how to leverage intellectual property (see: Marvel), and making the new era the focus of a new animated series would obviously be an easy to generate buzz for the new films.
What do you think? Is this a good idea for Disney’s next animated series?
