Rumor of the day: Doctor Who showrunner attached to Star Wars film

Could Steven Moffat be writing and/or directing one of the new Star Wars movies?

That's the rumor emanating from Jedi News, which reports that Moffat -- who's been running Doctor Who for five years, and also co-created Sherlock -- might be involved as a writer or director with the biggest franchise in the world.

Keep in mind that this is very much in the "rumor" camp, with no official word yet at all on the subject. But if Moffat is indeed being considered for a job on Star Wars, it's probably through Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy, who was once Steven Spielberg's longtime producer and worked with Moffat on The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, which Moffat co-wrote.

What could Moffat allegedly be up for? Well, he could be in the mix to direct Star Wars Episode IX, which does not officially have a director even though Episode VIII writer/director Rian Johnson is penning the script for it.

But a more likely scenario has Moffat writing and/or directing the third standalone Star Wars movie. Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) and Josh Trank (Fantastic Four) have already been named as the directors on the first two, although it has yet to be revealed what any of them is officially about.

We'll see if this turns into reality in the weeks and months ahead or never gets past the rumor stage. Would Moffat be a good fit to work on Star Wars? Does he have too much on his plate already with new seasons of Who and Sherlock on the way?
