Rumor of the Day: Has the main villain for Justice League been revealed?

Despite Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice heavily hinting at the imminent arrival of Darkseid for Zack Snyder’s Justice League Part One (or at least, so we think), it looks like the villain of the piece will be another DC Comics baddie.

According to Birth.Movies.Death (so consider this a RUMOR), it won’t be the tyrannical ruler of Apokolips Earth's heroes will have to go toe to toe with in the upcoming DCEU superhero movie, but another of the New Gods: Steppenwolf.

In the comic books, Steppenwolf is Darkseid’s uncle. He’s also a member of Darkseid’s Elite and leads the military. Steppenwolf is one of the earliest survivors of Doomsday, the Kryptonian monster who killed Superman. The hoverbike-riding and energy-ax-wielding character was created by Jack Kirby in 1972 for the pages of New Gods vol. 1 #7 but was never the strongest of villains, having been killed by Clock King.

In The New 52 reboot, the character leads a massive invasion of Earth-2 by Darkseid’s parademons (who were seen in Batman v Superman) that eventually leads to the death of the Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman of that Earth, even though the invasion is successfully repelled by Earth’s heroes. This Steppenwolf was killed by Earth-2's version of Bizarro. BMD believes this is the storyline that may be used in Justice League. As per the site:

In Justice League Steppenwolf has a contentious history with Darkseid, which could be why he's invading the Earth. But stopping him - and, I'm assuming, his Parademon hordes - requires more power than the members of the Justice League can muster, and so they must turn to a dead friend for help...

If you think Steppenwolf being the main villain in Justice League seems pretty darn random, just look at this deleted scene from Batman v Superman and you'll see it’s not as far-fetched as you think. The weird character Lex Luthor sees? He could be a Snyder-ized movie version of Steppenwolf (that was the buzz on the Internet when Warner Bros. released that scene). Can this also mean that the powerful being Lex said was coming is Steppenwolf rather than Darkseid? Check it out:

Despite not being the main bad guy, it seems that Darkseid will indeed be a presence in the movie but won’t fully appear until the very end, so we’ll have to wait for Justice League Part Two to roll around in 2019 until we get some full-on Justice League vs. Darkseid action, and we'll officially know by the end of Part One on Nov. 17, 2017, if that's indeed the scenario.

What say you?
