The cast list for DC’s upcoming Suicide Squad film is filling out, and Friday Night Lights alum Jay Hernandez is rumored to be playing the latest comic baddie.
The Wrap is reporting that Hernandez (Hostel, Gang Related) is joining the antihero flick in a supporting role, supposedly as an inmate alongside Jared Leto’s Joker. The casting scoop doesn’t name exactly who he might be playing, but Latino Review reports it will be Chato Santana, aka mid-tier comic villain El Diablo.
Take it with a grain of salt at this point, but it stands to reason they’d populate the film with several B-list villains from the comic canon. Along with El Diablo, the report also claims we’ll get a glimpse of fellow baddies Killer Frost, Block Buster, King Shark and Live Wire. These criminals, along with the Joker and El Diablo, will apparently be held in a special area designed for supervillains.
The comic version of Chato Santana was created in 2008 and is a former gang member gifted with pyrokinesis. It’s worth noting he’s also been a member of the Suicide Squad in the comics, so this could be a setup for a larger role in a future film (assuming the first one does well enough to warrant a sequel, of course).
If the deal closes, Hernandez will be the latest good actor to join this project. Warner Bros. already has Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress and Jared Leto as the Joker. Viola Davis is also reportedly in talks to co-star as Amanda Waller, and Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor could even pop up in some capacity.
What do you think of how this DC spinoff is apparently shaping up?
