Other than it's said to be loosely based on the “Old Man Logan” comics storyline, that it'll take place in the future and the movie will be R-rated, all we know about Wolverine 3 is that the movie will star Hugh Jackman back as the Adamantium-clad mutant, Boyd Holbrook as the movie’s lead villain who's described as a “relentless, calculating … intense head of security for a global enterprise” and Richard E. Grant as a mad scientist.
Now a new report over at Nerdist claims that a source close to the production has told them the movie will feature a group of cybernetic supervillains. According to the site, the Reavers will also be in the movie set to be Hugh Jackman’s swan song as Wolverine. They also say they’ve “heard small rumblings that Liev Schreiber might be returning as Sabretooth…”
In the Marvel Comics, the Reavers were a group of criminal cyborgs dedicated to the destruction of the X-Men because they were mutants. And the Reavers HATE mutants. Their members included Lady Deathstrike, Pretty Boy, Bonebreaker and Skullbuster and a number of the Reavers wanted to take revenge on one X-Man in particular, and that’d be Wolverine. Although the name was first used by a gang of Australian cyborgs, they were revived under the leadership of one Donald Pierce and the new group consisted of three original surviving members as well as some new cyborgs.
Donald Pierce himself was a genocidal mutant-hating cyborg who joined the Hellfire Club in order to destroy them (because half of them were mutants) and was a bit of a mechanical genius. Nerdist posits this is the role that Grant will play. They also theorize that the Hellfire Club or Essex Corp. could be the “global enterprise” that’s backing them up. In case you're wondering, Essex Corp. makes sense in light of the description of the X-Men: Apocalypse after-credits scene that's emerged a week ago, but of course, that's not a one hundred percent certainty, though it would certainly tie in the events of Apocalypse to the new Wolverine movie quite nicely.
Directed by James Mangold from a screenplay by David James Kelly, Wolverine 3 is set to open on March 3, 2017. What do you think of Old Man Logan clawing his way through the Reavers in the upcoming movie?
