Last we heard, Marc Webb’s Amazing Spider-Man 2 put Mary Jane of the chopping block because the film was getting too crowded — and now we might know why.
Major potential spoilers ahead!
The folks at Movie Web are reporting that Dane DeHaan’s Harry Osborn will suit up as the Green Goblin in the big finale of the film, apparently playing a role in the final battle between Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield) and Electro (Jamie Foxx).
Oh, and the final battle? It’ll apparently take place at the Oscorp Power Plant, which is allegedly where we’ll get Gwen Stacy’s (Emma Stone) death scene late in the game. Again, take it with a grain of salt, but it all sounds interesting.
Considering that we already have Electro and Rhino (Paul Giamatti) as part of the rogues gallery, the addition of the Goblin does make for a pretty cram-packed film. But it sounds like Webb noticed that pretty quickly, which is likely why the Mary Jane storyline was bumped to the next sequel (and will still have more than enough time to play out heading into part four).
Check out an excerpt from their report below:
“Yes, though we had to wait until Spider-Man 3 to see James Franco as New Goblin, this iteration of the mythos finds Dane DeHaan suiting up as the glider riding genetically altered supervillain during the climax of the film, which will take place at an Oscorp Power Planet...
Electro calls the Oscorp Power Planet home in this sequel, and it serves as the source of his great electrically charged super powers. This will be the sight of Gwen's undoing, but as we've reported in the past, what looks to be the iconic death as seen in the comic book will actually be a fake out, with her actual demise coming later in the series.”
If this turns out to be true, are you glad to hear that the Goblin will make an appearance, possibly as a setup for future sequels?
