For several years now, the idea of a Justice League Dark movie has been little more than a twinkle in Guillermo del Toro's eye, but now that Warner Bros. is taking its development of a DC Comics universe seriously, and Scott Rudin has been brought in to help produce the film, the rumor mill is firing off casting reports left and right.
Yesterday, we heard that both Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor are being considered for the role of John Constantine in the film, which will reportedly also feature other supernatural DC figures like Swamp Thing and Etrigan the Demon. Now, we're hearing new reports about who the villain of the piece might be, and who might play him.
According to Heroic Hollywood, Warner Bros. wants Ben Mendelsohn for the role of Anton Arcane, a villain that's traditionally faced off against Swamp Thing. Part scientist and part sorcerer, Arcane is obsessed with immortality, and at one point even tried to basically pull a body-swap with Swamp Thing. In the New 52, he's been portrayed as the incarnation of The Rot, and has clashed with both Swamp Thing and Animal Man. If you're into the supernatural side of DC Comics, you know he's bad news, and he could very well be a perfect fit for this movie.
Mendelsohn, for his part, is having a great year thanks to the hit Netflix series Bloodline (which earned him an Emmy nomination), the acclaimed film Mississippi Grind, and his upcoming work in Gareth Edwards' Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. There's no doubt that he's one of the most sought-after character actors in Hollywood right now, but according to this report, he's only interested in the role based on who will direct the film, something Rudin and company haven't decided on yet.
So, a rising star's name has emerged to further elaborate the Justice League Dark picture. What do you think? Would Mendelsohn make a good Anton Arcane?
