Rumor of the Day: A missing fan-favorite Game of Thrones character WILL appear

One of the joys of watching HBO’s Game of Thrones is seeing our favorite characters from George R.R. Martin’s series A Song of Ice and Fire come to life. If this rumor is to be believed, we’re about to see another favorite character: Lady Stoneheart.

According to Twitter feed IrishThrones, “Lady Stoneheart WILL appear and command an army!”

A brief, only vaguely spoiler-y synopsis: Lady Stoneheart has supplanted Beric Dondarrion as the new leader of the Brotherhood Without Banners and causes trouble in the North by killing members of Houses Bolton, Frey, and Lannister. When last we left our anti-hero in A Feast for Crows, she had captured Brienne of Tarth and Podrick Payne. Stoneheart gives Brienne a choice in how they die: sword or noose. Brienne refuses, and so Stoneheart has them strung up.

In A Dance with Dragons, Brienne appears without Podrick and no word of Stoneheart. We assume both are alive.

Yes, I’ve left out a great deal of detail here, because I don’t want to spoil it.

You really want spoilers? Don’t say I didn’t warn you:

Open eyeClose eye Show Spoiler Stoneheart is the corpse of Lady Catelyn Stark, who had been dead three days before the Brotherhood Without Banners revived her. Beric Dondarrian brings her to sort-of life, but he dies as a result. In other words, Stoneheart is Zombie Catelyn Stark. And when I say in the first paragraph, “favorite characters come to life," I’m actually making a joke. Laugh.

We had had hints that Stoneheart would appear in the most recent season when Lena Headey posted a picture of stones in the shape of a heart back in June 2014. But the plot moved on without her.

It would be wonderful to see Stoneheart, and not just because she’s commands the outlaw band, the Brotherhood Without Banners. It’s because she adds both horror and poignancy to the already compelling story.

According to a spoiler-heavy theory on the Nerdist, Stoneheart may have a role in the coming fight between the White Walkers and the Black Brothers - that is, the Night’s Watch.
