Rumor of the Day: New Batman movie to have lots of villains, but won't adapt Under the Red Hood

Ever since Ben Affleck and Geoff John’s The Batman (not the official title yet, you guys) was officially announced by Warner Bros., thoughts have turned to the movie’s potential Big Bad. Who will go up against the Cape Crusader in his first DCEU solo outing?

If you had hopes to see Batman's dead sidekick Jason Todd, aka Robin, rise from the grave as a villain in an adaptation of Under the Red Hood, a new report says it's not going to happen. Why? Because it would be too similar to Marvel’s Winter Soldier storyline.

In Under the Red Hood, the comic book storyline (as well as the Warner Bros. animated film) saw a long-believed-dead Jason Todd return to Gotham City -- alive and kicking -- as a violent antihero called the Red Hood who is dead set (gettit?) on taking down both Batman and The Joker.

As for the villain Batfleck will face, this is where it gets interesting, because if what Davin Faraci over at Birth.Movies.Death reports is true (it's a rumor, so don't forget to take it with a grain of salt), there’s going to be a whole lot of villains to choose from. Here's what he says:

Many, if not most, members of Batman's rogue's gallery will be making appearances in the film. It's going to be crammed with Bat villains, which means that just about every major bad guy you've ever wanted to see in a movie will be in this movie. According to my sources Affleck and Geoff Johns, who has been working with him on the film, want to make the definitive Batman film. They want to tell the ultimate Batman story, and to do so they're going to bring in all the big guns. They're going to have a big, sprawling Bat universe already in place.

At this point, having an already-established Batman universe is the best way to go with the new Bat-movie. No one needs to see the origin stories of The Joker, The Penguin and The Riddler again. I also think it's a safe bet to say most of those villains will probably only get cameo appearances. And one nifty way to introduce Batman’s gallery of rogues could be through Arkham Asylum. Whichever way they choose to go about it, I'm crossing my fingers it'll feel fresh and new.

What do you think? Are you bummed out that the new Batman movie may not adapt the Red Hood storyline? What do you think of Batman's rogues gallery showing up for the comic book film?
