With the recent rumors that 20th Century Fox is looking to do a soft reboot of its X-Men movie franchise, now comes word that the studio may have just found the perfect storyline to adapt: The Dark Phoenix Saga.
According to LRM, sources (so not official) have reported that Fox is eyeing the epic Dark Phoenix storyline for the next movie. Not only that, but they claim that my favorite comic book character ever (after Wonder Woman) will be central to the new X-Men film and may still feature the X-Men: Apocalypse cast.
In the pages of the Marvel comics, the Phoenix Force was a cosmic entity that took on the form of Jean Grey after a mission to space led to Jean sacrificing herself to save her teammates (the real Jean was safely placed in a coccoon at the botton of the ocean by the Phoenix Force so she could heal while the entity took on Jean's form and personality). It later turned to Dark Phoenix when the entity’s human form (as Jean) couldn’t control the power of the Phoenix. A devourer of worlds, Dark Phoenix was more powerful than Galactus himself, which makes her a formidable foe to pitch against Xavier’s team and the perfect cinematic villain.
However, in the movies, the Phoenix force has been depicted (so far) as an integral part of Jean’s mutant powers rather than a cosmic entity. And while director Brett Ratner’s X-Men: The Last Stand partially adapted the storyline (and completely dropped the ball in the process — I mean, how in the holy heck they even managed to screw that one up is still beyond me; even after all these years), it wasn’t the main focus of the film.
I have high hopes the new movie will finally do right by the Phoenix. In X-Men: Apocalypse, it was a young
Sansa Stark Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) who managed to defeat Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) by unleashing the fiery power of the Phoenix. Maybe this time the X-Men Cinematic Universe will get the Dark Phoenix Saga the character — and the fans — deserve. What do you think? In the meanwhile, behold the power of the Phoenix!
