While it seems a lot of people were disappointed (and I’m putting this mildly) when Marvel and Netflix announced that Game of Thrones actor Finn Jones had been cast as Danny Rand in the new Iron Fist series (although I've got to say, I'm baffled by the Finn Jones casting naysayers because Danny-boy in the Marvel comics is a white dude, and not Asian) it now looks like they’re searching for actors of Asian descent to fill a very important comic-book role.
A report over at MCU Exchange and That Hashtag Show revealed that Marvel and Netflix are in the process of casting fan-favorite character Shang-Chi for Iron Fist, which is set to begin filming in April, and that they’re “exclusively auditioning males of Asian descent.”
A very popular Marvel character, Shang-Chi became a Hero for Hire alongside Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist and was a member of The Defenders. He recently became a member of The Avengers and was an important part of the Shadowland arc that's widely rumored to be adapted for Netflix’s The Defenders series.
Often called “The Master of Kung Fu,” Shang-Chi was the son of Kung Fu villain Dr. Fu Manchu (a character to which Marvel had acquired the rights to) and worked with British Intelligence as an MI-6 agent. With no superpowers, the character displayed extraordinary mastery of numerous unarmed and weaponry-based wushu styles, including the gun, swords, staves, nunchaku and shuriken, thanks to his extraordinary mastery of chi.
Would you love to see Shang-Chi on Marvel and Netflix’s Iron Fist? Who do you think would be perfect for the role?
