Rumor of the Day: Sony wants an Aunt May flick - without Spider-Man?

There’s a rumor going around right now that Sony, Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are looking to make a spy-thriller starring Peter Parker's Aunt May. The flick would be set in the youth of a pre-Spider-Man Mary Reilly Parker Jameson.

Yep, you read that right.

Here’s what Latino-Review reports:

Yes, an Aunt May movie. A movie about Aunt May as a youth, before she was shouldered with the responsibility of raising Peter Parker. The target mood is some sort of espionage story in the vein of AMC’s Mad Men, which sounds like a way of saying “classier Agent Carter” without name-dropping Marvel’s upcoming series.

Now, as we said, this is not official, so take this with a grain of salt.

Back in 2003, Mark Millar penned a romance mini-series called Trouble thinking it would be a new origin for Spidey. The story featured Aunt May, Uncle Ben, Richard and Mary Parker as teenagers. In the story, a teenage May was the one who became pregnant with Richard’s child (yup, making her Peter's real mum), giving up baby Peter to Mary who ultimately took the secret to her grave.

Can you guys believe it didn’t do well? Yeah, it didn't. Fans hated it. So that was the end of it, and our friendly neighbourhood’s parentage reverted to what it was before Trouble tried to screw it up.

So, if Aunt May’s story as a youth didn’t do so well with readers, why does Sony want to make a movie about her? Is it an effort to imitate -- or even do better than -- ABC's upcoming Agent Carter TV series? This rumored movie would be creating an entirely new back story for Peter Parker’s beloved aunt. At least the espionage bit would be new.

What do you guys think? Would you go for a young Aunt May movie as a spy-thriller?
