While everyone expected Zendaya’s Spider-Man: Homecoming character Michelle (or is she really Mary Jane Watson?) to be Spidey’s love interest in the movie, it now looks like that won’t be the case. At least, that’s what the Disney star said in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter. (Though perhaps the lady doth protest too much?)
So, if Zendaya is not playing the object of Peter’s (Tom Holland) affections in the Marvel/Sony superhero film, then who is? Well, Latino-Review has done some digging, and according to them, that role will be filled by Liz Allan, played by Laura Harrier. Well, isn’t that a refreshing change from Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane Watson!
In the pages of the Marvel comics, Liz Allan was the high-school love interest of Peter Parker but she was dating Flash Thompson (played by Tony Revolori in the movie). The character never achieved the same status as, say, Betty Brant, Gwen Stacy or Mary Jane Watson and she pretty much disappeared as soon as Peter said goodbye to high-school, before she returned years later and ended up marrying Harry Osborn. Yup, the Green Goblin.
One of the cool kids, she also treated Peter like a nerd until she developed a crush on him. By that time, Peter had lost interest in her when he started dating Betty. Since the Marvel Cinematic Universe likes to carve its own path regarding its characters it’s going to be interesting to see how they’ll actually portray that relationship in the movie, although the site claims that it will probably be close to the comic book one. What do you think?
