A new rumor is making the rounds about the proposed ending for Iron Man 3. It’s insane, sure, but it might just be crazy enough to work.
The latest buzz is that the ending of Iron Man 3 will lay the groundwork for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, with Tony Stark heading into deep space (remember that new armor we heard about?) to hook up with the Guardians. The speculation comes from Latino Review and a few others. If it's true this could be just the thing to generate mainstream interest in one of the least-familiar films in Marvel’s Phase 2 slate.
Based on the comic run of the same name, Guardians is a story set in deep space about a team of lesser-known characters such as Star Lord, Rocket Raccoon and Drax the Destroyer. If Marvel hopes to build some buzz for the 2014 project, this is the way to do it. Iron Man is easily the biggest standalone star on the roster, and connecting him to the new team (even if it's just as a jumping off point) would be a great way to introduce fans in an organic way.
Even Iron Man star Robert Downey, Jr. has gotten in on the speculation, making some deeply veiled comments to Entertainment Weekly when asked about potential cameos from Marvel’s bench:
“[T]he next step after that is to bring in someone like Shane Black and – without pretending that the Avengers don’t exist – find a way to go back to a kind of re-investigation of Tony’s world, which he thought would be, one, fun for the audience and, two, would rock in a different way than The Avengers. But we can’t help it — everywhere you look now in every Marvel movie there are opportunities where certain new pals of his could be useful. So they’re in the atmosphere, so to speak, but I wouldn’t expect to see them on the ground in this one.”
Hmm, in the atmosphere? Definitely sounds like Downey, Jr. is trying to say something without actually saying it, which is a trick he’s mastered in his tenure as Iron Man. What do you think? Would you like the end of Iron Man 3 to set up Guardians of the Galaxy?
