Looks like Hugh Jackman’s adamantium-clad mutant and Sir Patrick Stewart’s Professor X will be joined by another X-Man in The Wolverine 3.

A new report over at SuperHeroHype claims that X-23 will make her big-screen debut in Jackman’s third and final solo outing as the Canadian mutant. They also caution that this hasn’t been confirmed yet, so remember to take it with a grain of salt.

However, based on yesterday’s report over at ComicBook.com that a casting call from Central Casting had gone out and that they were looking for shorter stand-ins of “Caucasian, Hispanic and Asian looking females over the age of 21,” specifically at a height of 4' - 4'11" and size 0-4 with dark brown hair,” there could be some truth to that. And if Jackman is really hanging up his claws for good, this could be the way for Fox to create a passing of the baton type of situation.

So, who is X-23?

In the Marvel Comics, Laura Kinney, aka X-23, is a female clone of Wolverine who first appeared in the animated series X-Men: Evolution before making her comic-book debut in the NYX comic series in 2004. Like Logan, X-23 has a healing factor as well as superhuman strength, speed, senses, agility and reflexes. She also has retractable adamantium-clad bone claws. But where Logan has three, X-23 boasts two claws on each hand and one on each foot.

Yep. Really.

Cloned from a damaged copy of Wolverine’s genome after the first 22 attempts failed, she became the first viable embryo -- hence her being female (they couldn't extract the Y chromosome) and her code name -- X-23 was created to be a perfect killing machine and worked as an assassin for an organization called the Facility. A series of events led her to Wolverine's door, and she attended Xavier’s school and became a member of X-Force. When Logan died in 2015, X-23 took up Wolverine's mantle.

Said to be loosely based on the “Old Man Logan” comics storyline and, thanks to Deadpool’s crazy success at the box office earlier this year, the superhero film will be rated R. Boyd Holbrook will play the movie’s lead villain.

Directed by James Mangold from a screenplay by David James Kelly, The Wolverine 3 is set to open on March 3, 2017. What do you think? Would X-23 be a great addition to the X-Men Universe?
