The braintrust behind the DC film universe over at Warner Bros. Studios is reportedly considering making Shazam's most infamous nemesis into the main villain of Suicide Squad 2.
Two unnamed inside sources told The Wrap that the proposed plot for the Suicide Squad sequel would involve the anti-hero team searching for a weapon of mass destruction -- which turns out to be Black Adam.
Although a Black Adam solo film was announced back at the beginning of 2017, there has been no writer or director assigned to the project. The Shazam film, meanwhile, is ramping up toward production with Zachary Levi signed to play the title hero (aka Captain Marvel), David F. Sandberg (Annabelle: Creation) directing, and Black Adam apparently not appearing in that one.
Johnson, meanwhile, might have had an inkling of the Suicide Squad 2 development back in May when he told Fandango, "We have a really cool surprise for Black Adam that I can’t reveal, in terms of where we will see Black Adam being introduced."
Suicide Squad 2 is scheduled to begin filming next October with Gavin O'Connor writing and possibly directing for release sometime in 2019. Will Smith, Margot Robbie, and the rest of the team are all expected back, but a main villain has yet to be announced for the sequel. Official reps for the studio and Johnson have not commented on the Black Adam rumor.
Introducing Black Adam within the framework of a Suicide Squad movie makes sense on several levels: For one, even with the star power of The Rock, the character is not generally known to non-comic book fans, which could be challenging for his introduction in a standalone movie.
Second, although the first Suicide Squad was a hit ($750 million worldwide box office), it was also derided by a lot of critics and fans; a dose of Dwayne could give a nice boost to the sequel. And then, of course, that paves the way for the eventual Shazam/Black Adam showdown.
