Gwyneth Paltrow has been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the very beginning, when she starred as Pepper Potts opposite Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark in Iron Man. In theory, Paltrow should be well aware of how Marvel Studios values its secrecy, even though she’s only appeared briefly in two MCU movies since Iron Man 3. However, Paltrow may have inadvertently dropped two big reveals about Avengers 4. And if the rumor is true, then she did it within the pages of the official Avengers: Infinity War magazine!
SPOILER ALERT: This post includes major plot points for Avengers: Infinity War and a potentially huge spoiler for Avengers 4.
Twitter user @ashley__renae appears to have posted a picture of Paltrow’s interview in the magazine, in which the Oscar winner said: "Pepper and Tony have had a real long journey together. She obviously starts as his dutiful assistant, and then the relationship evolves, and now this decade later they're married, and they have a child. Their relationship has evolved in all of the ways that great romances evolve."
For further context, another picture of the complete interview was posted later.
If Paltrow really said this, it could mean that Avengers 4 is going to have some kind of time jump. At the beginning of Infinity War, Tony tells Pepper he had a dream where they had a child together, which she kind of laughs off. To go from that to suddenly having a kid means that at least a year or two will have passed between the third Avengers film and the fourth. Perhaps the leap could be even further than that as the movie explores what the universe is like after Thanos' actions.
Within the Marvel Universe, Tony and Pepper's relationship is more complex and usually platonic. They don't have a kid together and they haven't been romantically involved for a while. Assuming the events of Avengers 4 aren't wiped away by the Time Stone, Tony and Pepper having a kid could give Marvel a way to retire Iron Man without killing him off. Maybe Tony Stark Jr. could even become the new MCU Iron Man somewhere down the line.
The thing that makes us skeptical about this rumor is that if it came from the official Infinity War magazine, then someone missed a very big spoiler about a movie that won’t even come out for another year. It’s the kind of detail that Marvel would probably not want to reveal this far out, and it somehow escaped editorial scrutiny. Stranger things have happened, but this would represent someone's gargantuan mistake if it somehow remained undetected until now.
We’ll find out for sure when Avengers 4 opens on May 3, 2019, in the meantime, what do you make of all this?
