Director Shane Black opened up a few weeks ago about his dream choice for the lead role of Doc Savage -- the original “super” hero of the 1930s -- and his choice? Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
Speaking to Thrillist, Black said, “I would very much like to do Doc with a fellow named Dwayne Johnson if we can make that work. I made a decision that Dwayne is the guy,” saying the movie was on the back burner until Johnson was available. Awww. He even mentioned he was hoping for the cameras to roll on the movie "sometime next year."
Shane Black has been attached to helm Doc Savage from a screenplay he co-wrote with Anthony Bagarozzi (The Nice Guys) and Chuck Mondry (The Nice Guys) since 2013. A few years ago, Chris Hemsworth’s (Thor) name was being touted as a possible Doc Savage, but for the director, there can be only one.
Now it seems that Johnson has gotten the memo and the busy actor (he's currently filming Baywatch and has Fast and Furious 8 and the Rampage video game adaptation on his busy schedule) has taken to Instagram to tease his involvement in an upcoming Shane Black movie by writing: “I'm reading an outline for a cool movie I'll make in 2017 (with director Shane Black).”
Of course, none of this is an official confirmation that Johnson is indeed playing the role, so remember to take it all with a grain of salt until this piece of potentially awesome news is actually confirmed.
Doc Savage tells the story of the man of bronze who possesses superhuman strength, endurance, intelligence and agility. A brilliant scientist, inventor and explorer, he spends his time battling the bad guys and ridding the world of evil. The character began as a series of pulp novels and radio series in the 1930s and '40s. A not-so-good movie, Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze (I've included the trailer below JUST BECAUSE), was produced in 1975 starring Tarzan actor Ron Ely in the title role, and the character also found life in multiple comic book series.
Do you guys think The Rock would be the perfect choice for the role of the man of bronze in director Shane Black’s upcoming Doc Savage movie?
