The disco diva known as Dazzler is set to appear in the next X-Men installment, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, and word around the X-Mansion campus is that she has been cast.
According to Omega Underground (via Slashfilm), actress Halston Sage has won the role of Alison Blaire, the mutant pop singer who can turn sound vibrations into beams of energy and light. Sage can be seen on Seth MacFarlane’s upcoming sci-fi series The Orville, and has also played supporting roles in films like Paper Towns, The Bling Ring, Goosebumps, Neighbors, and Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse.
While this still falls under the "rumor" heading for now, the site points out that Sage has been spotted hanging out with the cast of Dark Phoenix at a recent Hans Zimmer concert in Montreal, where the movie is shooting. Providing more concrete evidence, however, is this picture:
That's a selfie posted on Instagram (and since deleted, it seems) by Dark Phoenix stuntman Mich Todorovic, and behind him you can see a board full of cast member photos. That's Sage there in the red circle. Interestingly, a headshot of Jessica Chastain -- rumored to be playing a villain in the film -- can also be seen in the pic.
In the comics, Dazzler was originally the product of a crossover marketing scheme between Marvel and Casablanca Records, one-time behemoth of the late '70s disco craze. While the character never really became more than a B-level member of the vast X-Men canon, she has popped up in the pages of Marvel Comics as late as 2015 and was even briefly a future president of the United States in a book called X-Men: Battle of the Atom.
Of course, her album cover was glimpsed in the now-famous scene that was ultimately cut from X-Men: Apocalypse, but it seems as if Dazzler, in the person of Halston Sage, will make her big-screen debut at last in Dark Phoenix. How large or small the role will end up being remains to be seen.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix, directed by Simon Kinberg and starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Evan Peters, presumably in addition to Sage and Chastain, will open on November 2, 2018.
