Is Frankenstein's monster planning to pull a Heartbreak Kid and trade in his current bride for a newer, younger model?
The Wrap seems to think so, reporting that Hollywood “insiders” are saying that Bride of Frankenstein director Bill Condon (Beauty and the Beast) is considering Wonder Woman's Gal Gadot for the eponymous role. Of course, that's if current rumored star Angelina Jolie decides to pull out (if she was ever really attached). But let’s be clear: This is all speculation at this point, and there is no concrete proof that Jolie is either in or out, and the only officially IMDb'd cast member is Javier Bardem as Frankenstein's monster.
Nevertheless, this rumor comes just one day after Universal pulled the movie off its initially announced release date of Feb. 14, 2019, stating that they didn't want to rush the remake of James Whale’s 1935 original starring Boris Karloff and Elsa Lanchester. Probably a smart move after this past summer's poorly received introductory entry to the company’s “Dark Universe,” The Mummy. It seems that the studio is learning from the mistakes it made in 2004 with Stephen Sommers's Van Helsing, where it tried to throw all of its classic creatures at us at once, in what many considered a lackluster mess.
“This is fairly out of nowhere given how deep they were into prep over there, but not really surprising — their mandate has more or less been that they wanted these to work as PG-rated action movies/theme-park rides, not horror movies,” said The Wrap’s aforementioned insider. “Basically ‘Fast and the Furious’ meets ‘The Avengers’ – but with super monsters.”
The idea of a shared cinematic world of Universal’s most iconic monsters (i.e. Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, The Creature From the Black Lagoon, Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, etc.) is as bold as it is risky, but it’s got the potential for success. Still, that doesn’t mean Gadot would immediately sign on if Jolie shouldn't. After all, the Israeli model/actress is already making huge waves in another cinematic universe as Diana Prince, a role that proves to be paying huge dividends. With the upcoming release of Justice League and Wonder Woman 2 in the works, she may be perfectly comfortable on her Amazonian throne for the time being.
