UPDATED: In a recent interview, Peele said he would prefer to focus on original material. So, you can probably count him out for Akira. Our original report follows:
Fresh off his acclaimed directorial debut Get Out, Jordan Peele is reportedly on the short list to tackle the live action take on the anime Akira.
The report comes from The Tracking Board, which is sourced from “insiders” at CinemaCon with knowledge of Warner Bros. plans (hence this is labeled a rumor). The studio is apparently looking to court Peele to get the long-gestating Akira project off the ground, and even if that doesn’t work out, the studio is high on him to take on something with a high profile (the director-less Flash film is another potential option).
Hollywood has been trying to get a live action take on Katsuhiro Otomo’s manga off the ground for years, with little luck. But, Peele has definitely shown he knows how to handle a tricky story. But, would his skills translate into something like Akira? That could get tricky. His handle of racial issues could help the studio make decisions that could sidestep any white-washing concerns (i.e. Ghost in the Shell), but that’s still a very different type of project to tackle for only your second film.
For now, it’s just a rumor. But, as Get Out continues to land on Best Of lists, expect Peele’s name to remain a hot one for a while.
