Jon Bernthal's much-anticipated portrayal of Frank Castle, aka the Punisher, in the upcoming second season of Daredevil is getting such rave reviews from the powers-that-be that it looks like Marvel is keen to deliver him into a new Netflix series of his own rather than to try and launch an Iron Fist show.

An intriguing rumor has been making the rounds lately that Marvel is planning to scrap its Iron Fist Netflix series in favor of a Punisher one. The rumor first appeared over a week ago, when the good folks at Peel the Orange reported the tidbit below:

Marvel can’t quite seem to figure out how to put Iron Fist into the equation and time is running out. They’re very pleased with Jon Bernthal’s portrayal of Frank Castle for Season 2 of Daredevil and know that the fans have a great appreciation for the character. They also know that a Punisher series would be much cheaper and more marketable. They have a contract with Netflix and have to do something. It appears that for this phase of shows, time is running thin for Iron Fist.

Apparently, Marvel is having a hard time finding a showrunner for Iron Fist. They claim all of the pitches they've received for the series are nothing that they can really work with. I don't know if there's any truth to this, but if there is, it's a bit of a bummer, because I was looking forward to seeing the martial arts practitioner wield the mystical force known as the Iron Fist.

However, all's not lost!

The site is now claiming that Marvel has indeed tossed a wrench in its Iron Fist TV series by favoring one featuring Frank Castle. But even though we won't see Danny Rand kick some butt for 13 episodes straight, Iron Fist will be made as a feature-length movie instead! According to an anonymous source who works within Marvel Creative:

Marvel will be turning Iron Fist into a Netflix exclusive feature film. This will give Marvel extra time and a larger budget for this project. The Punisher will replace Iron Fist as one of the four Defenders.

It’s great to see that Iron Fist is not entirely being shafted by Marvel. However, what will it mean for the character? Since he's apparently being replaced by Punisher as a lead-up to The Defenders, what will Iron Fist's role be in the overall Marvel Cinematic Universe?   Any thoughts?
