We don’t know much about Sony’s upcoming Silver and Black comic book movie yet, but a new report may have revealed the villains of the piece — and there are a lot of them.
According to That Hashtag Show, Silver and Black will reportedly feature several classic Spider-Man baddies (most will have small roles in order to establish them for future films), with the first being Mendel Stromm, aka Gaunt.
A frequent Spider-Man flyer since 1966, the movie version is said to have a long history with Silver Sablinova, and her Symkarian people. Apparently, the character did some experimentation on them, and Silver’s looking for some good old-fashioned revenge. Gaunt is enhancing humans with some high-tech exo-suits.
The next villain is Anton Rodriguez, aka Tarantula. Stromm’s henchman, Rodriguez (who is said to have a small role in the film) is out to get Felicia Hardy. Described as a bit of a lady’s man, he attacks our dynamic duo with “an exo-boot comparable to the toe blades he used in the comics.”
Then we have Mac Gargan, aka Scorpion. The character, played by Orphan Black’s Michael Mando, made his appearance in Spider-Man: Homecoming. The site reports that his role in Silver and Black will advance the character as a potential villain for the Spidey sequel. Whether the character will be played by Mando or another actor remains to be seen, but since Sony's Spider-Man spinoffs (which also include Venom) are said to exist in the same (adjacent-ish) continuity as the Marvel movie, I don’t see why they'd go and cast another actor for the role.
The site says: “Gargan will have a small role in the film, but he will indeed be outfitted by Gaunt with an exo-suit, which we are told will include the scorpion tail. He will come across Silver and Felicia more than once and will return for the film’s action-packed final battle sequence.”
Fourth on the list (and in another small role) is one of the web-crawler’s oldest foes, Dimitri Smerdyakov, aka The Chameleon. Created in 1963 by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko for the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man #1, the Chameleon will have a different origin story in the movie, with him being Silver’s “go to guy for information in South America as he is the man in the know at the Tri-Border of Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil where Felicia is hiding.”
Last but not least, in yet another small role is Lonnie Lincoln, aka Tombstone, who is after Felicia because she’s gotten her hands on something that belongs to him. He’ll apparently keep his trademark comic book looks … which are pretty striking, to say the least (see the pic above).
Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love and Basketball, The Secret Life of Bees, Marvel's Cloak and Dagger), Silver and Black is produced by Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal, from a screenplay by Lisa Joy (Westworld) and Chris Yost (Thor: Ragnarok). The movie is slated to open in October 2018. What do you think of all those Spidey villains possibly showing up in Silver and Black? Let us know and chime in with your dream cast.
