Rumor: Matt Smith may leave Doctor Who next year

Matt Smith leaped into the role of the 11th Doctor Who in 2010, and he's been delighting us with his goofy charm and bowties ever since. But in a new interview, he may have revealed that he won't be playing the Doctor much longer.

According to SFX—who acknowledged "It may be a mere slip of the tongue"—Matt Smith gave an interview with VH1 wherein he merely slipped the following:

When VH1 asked him, "When are we going to have you?", Smith replied,

Well, hopefully soon, you know. I've got another year of Doctor Who, but then I'm certainly going to come and give it a shot, come and hang out in LA... as you say, people like Andy [Garfield] have come over, and he's a mate of mine. I'm very proud to see him doing Spider-Man, 'cause we did a play together, and, you know, Spider-Man now.

When Smith says, "I've got another year of Doctor Who," on one hand, it could mean that his contract is up in a year, but he's up for renegotiation. On the other hand, it could mean that in a year from now, he's going to try living la vida Los Angeles. On the gripping hand, it could mean that he'll just be taking an L.A. vacation and working on his tan.

Will Matt Smith only give us three seasons? Will the 12th Doctor be the last? Does he or does he not have River's extra lives?

We'll have to wait (impatiently) to learn if we'll be watching the Fezzed One much longer.

Or we could always grab a TARDIS and see the future for ourselves.
