We're still a ways away from Doctor Who's 50th anniversary—which is set to arrive on Nov. 23, 2013—but plans are already afoot. And word has it that one of the Doctor's greatest villains will return to help celebrate ... and he'll be played by an impeccably named, phenomenally cheekboned rising star.
Yes, the rumor mill has it that Steven Moffat wants Benedict Cumberbatch—star of Moffat's Sherlock series, as well as the voice of Smaug in The Hobbit and the Big Bad in Star Trek 2—to play the renegade Time Lord. Which would make an eerie kind of sense, given that the Master was designed to be Moriarty to the Doctor's Holmes.
According to The Express, an unnamed source told them the following:
"It's fitting that the Doctor comes face to face with his ultimate enemy, The Master, for the 50th anniversary and it's felt Benedict is the perfect choice if the schedules can work. Fans will love the idea of the man who plays Sherlock Holmes taking on the Doctor."
So, fans ... what say you? Is Cumberbatch an able replacement for previous Master John Simm?
