So, it’s become pretty clear with films like Edge of Tomorrow, Naked, and Happy Death Day (and its upcoming sequel) that Groundhog Day has spawned its own genre. And if the trailer for the new Netflix series Russian Doll is to be believed, we’re now getting an ultra-foulmouthed serialized version of the "reliving the same day over and over again" genre.
Co-created by Natasha Lyonne, Amy Poehler and Leslye Headland, and featuring an all-female writing and directing team, Russian Doll follows a young woman named Nadia as the guest of honor at a seemingly inescapable party one night in New York City.
The trailer opens on Nadia (Lyonne) in her bathroom getting ready to “f*** this party in the mouth” while the song “Crimson & Clover” plays (pertinent lyric: “Over and over...”). After partying and then leaving with a guy around her arm, boom! She’s suddenly hit by a cab where she looks... yeah. She’s dead. Definitely dead.
But of course, just because Nadia’s been killed doesn’t mean the literal and metaphorical party is done with her. Not by a long shot. Cut to: Nadia back in her bathroom with “Crimson & Clover” playing, and her looking very, very confused.
No matter. She goes to the same party... again... but when she decides to leave, she falls down the stairs and when her body hits the landing, those blank open eyes lead us to believe that... yup. She’s dead.
Cue “Crimson & Clover” again as she’s back in her bathroom. “F***!” Nadia exclaims.
Check out the trailer above, which shows Lyonne’s Nadia repeatedly reliving the same day and constantly confronting what appears to be New York’s deadliest staircase. (Hey, there’s always the fire escape... or the elevator.)
Greta Lee, Yul Vazquez, Elizabeth Ashley, and Charlie Barnett round out that cast, with Chloë Sevigny, Dascha Polanco, Brendan Sexton III, Rebecca Henderson, Jeremy Bobb, Ritesh Rajan, and Jocelyn Bioh guest-starring.
Folks have a chance to watch Russian Doll over and over again starting Feb. 1 on Netflix.
