Horror fans — especially American Horror Story fans — are gluttons for punishment. Series creator Ryan Murphy loves to tease out information on the newest seasons in tiny drips and drabs... and the fans gobble it up.

With the upcoming eighth season of AHS just about to go into production, Murphy will not confirm that the rumored subtitle, Radioactive, is accurate, but he does promise that the season will have a massive twist. "It’s a season unlike anything we’ve done because there’s a big hook to it," Murphy told EW. "There’s a huge thing that happens in Episode 5.”

This, in and of itself, is not news. No season is like any season before it, other than the fact that they all deal with twisted characters and gory murders. And yeah, serial killers do play an inordinately large role in many seasons.

Let's review: Season 1, Murder House, took the haunted house story and cranked it up to 11. Asylum blended aliens, serial killers, angry nuns, Nazis, and forest monsters into a zany season set in an insane asylum in the 1960s. Coven returned to the modern day (with flashbacks) with a look at witches in New Orleans. Freak Show was set in the 1950s and dealt with supernatural magicians and a serial killer who dressed as a clown, set against the backdrop of a carnival sideshow. Hotel was an art deco nightmare with vampires and a supernatural murderer. Roanoke took a different style by setting it up like a reality show focused on a haunted house. And last year's Cult was the first that had no supernatural elements, instead focusing on the cult of personality in our current political climate.

The cast for Season 8 will include a number of faces familiar to AHS fans: Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson, Kathy Bates, Cheyenne Jackson, Billy Eichner, Adina Porter, Leslie Grossman, and Billie Lourd. Paulson and Peters — who are the only two lead actors to appear in all eight seasons — will both direct episodes this time around. Newcomer to the franchise Joan Collins will play the grandmother of Evan Peters' character, who Murphy promises will be a "comedic hairdresser."

“You will see so many fan favorites return that you’ll feel like it’s The Love Boat,” Murphy says, comparing AHS to the light comedy show that was known for a plethora of guest actors and familiar faces. “It’s a very high concept.” Season 8 will be set about 18 months in the future — think October 2019. There is no air date yet for the new season, but if it follows with previous installments, look for it on FX this October.
