Sandra Bullock is getting some impressive star support for her first project with streaming giant Netflix.
Variety reports that in the post-apocalyptic thriller Bird Box, Bullock will be joined by a sci-fi-horror-tastic cast including Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story), Jacki Weaver (Picnic at Hanging Rock), Lil Rel Howery (Get Out), and Trevante Rhodes, who can next be seen in the soon-to-be-rebooted Predator.
Also on board is Australian newcomer Danielle Macdonald, who made a splash this year in the indie Sundance hit Patti Cake$.
The movie is based on the 2014 novel by Josh Malerman, which tells the story of a mother (played by Bullock) and her children, who are trying to survive in a futuristic world where a mysterious alien force has driven the world’s population to deadly violence.
Among a small group of survivors, the family of three is forced to make their way on a frightening journey, traveling 20 miles in a rowboat, all while completely blindfolded. Sounds intriguing!
According to USA Today, at one stage, Malerman wrote a rough draft of Bird Box before the release of M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening (2008) and The Road (2009), which made him worry that the book "might get lost in the shuffle."
As far as genre cred, Bullock is no stranger to sci-fi, having starred in Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity (2013) and Demolition Man (1993). And the script of this project is from Eric Heisserer, who wrote the Oscar-winning Arrival (2016). Meanwhile, Oscar-winning Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier is on directing duties.
